Research institutions and communities of science

  • Greater Helsinki Region is the heart of the national innovation system. The region contains the main offices of the most succesfull research and development organizations from both private and public sector.

  • Besides the operations in Greater Helsinki Region many of the central R&D players have also establishments elsewhere in Finland and also abroad. For instance, both University of Helsinki and Aalto University are well connected to domestic and international innovation networks. In addition, organizations collaborate widely with enterprises, other research and education organizations, international organizations and government units.

  • Besides faculties, high quality research and development is conducted in the research institutes or centers of universities. Many research institutes are joint platforms of several organizations and have also members outside the university sector. The equipment of some of the research institutes can be considered as part of the national research infrastructure (Micronova) and institutes can have other nationally important tasks as well: e.g. Helsinki Institute of Physics is responsible for the Finnish research collaboration with CERN.
