Patents

Finland has a high number of patent applications in relation to the country’s population of 5.4 million.

Totally 1833 applications were filed in Finland in 2010 and 1731 of these were from Finnish inventors. Totally 923 patents were granted and 717 of these were for Finnish inventors. However, the long-run trend in patenting has been that the significance of applications filed directly in Finland has diminished as the international patenting (PCT) has increased. In 2010, there were 12216 PRH and 34406 EPO granted patents in force.

The main technology areas filed by the domestic inventors in 2010 were the road –hydraulic and thermal engineering; processing and treatment and industrial chemistry. Most of the domestic patent applications or granted patents in Greater Helsinki Region are related to the IPC section of performing operations or transporting.
