Independent research institutes located in Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa

Besides faculties, high quality research and development is conducted in the research institutes or centers of universities. The research institutes can belong to only one university or they may be joint platforms of several organizations. Research insitutes can also have members outside the university sector. In addition, institutes often operate in or close to universities’ facilities. The equipment of some of the research institutes can be considered as part of the national research infrastructure (Micronova) and institutes can have other nationally important tasks as well: e.g. Helsinki Institute of Physics is responsible for the Finnish research collaboration with CERN.
